How?

How does it work?

Dependent upon your laser system, you have or are using Corel Photo-Paint or Adobe Photoshop. These "image manipulation" software applications have an ability to take a full color image and create what is called a CMYK color separation. Essentially creating four (C yan, M agenta, Y ellow, blac K ) color separated files out of the single file, full color image begun with.

+ + + =

These four files are individually lasered by your laser system with each file lasering its corresponding "laser color ink" which has been previously applied to the chosen substrate. In a nutshell: Four files, four inks, four laser passes.

Just like a CMYK inkjet color printer uses these four combined colors to create the entire spectrum of color combination so does the Atomic Art, full color laser engraving process. When done your completed piece is engraved in highly durable, full color, laser glory!

How do you get the color into the substrate?

A: By crystallizing and bonding the laser color inks to the substrate surface. The Atomic Art process uses the intense heat and incredible precision of a laser beam to "activate" the specially formulated "laser color inks." When the appropriate temperature has been reached the laser color inks crystallize and bond to the substrate. It is this combination of CMYK, four (4) laser color inks that combined make up the entire spectrum of colors.

How are the laser color inks applied?

A: With an airbrush connected to an air compressor that is putting out 20-40 PSI pressure. You can pick up an airbrush gun and air compressor at your local hobby/craft/hardware store or purchase our recommended airbrush kit and/or air compressor at the LaserInColor.com Shop . For thin consistent laser color ink coats we highly recommend an airbrush system as the easiest and fastest applying method. View our video example of applying the laser color inks and see for yourself how simple and quick the process really is on our Media page.

How do I realign the substrate if I have to remove it to spray 3 additional colors?

A: Using the rulers on your laser bed or a simple jig. View our Media page for a Lasering video example of how Atomic Art has used a basic and common door sign holder to bring the substrate farther away from the rulers for faster and easier access. Lasers are so precise that as long as you place your substrate against the rulers or jig your image will never be misaligned. If you have this problem it has nothing to do with Atomic Art but is in fact your laser system’s lack of accuracy. Speak to your laser support center to resolve this as all laser systems are extremely accurate.

How accurate are the color renditions?

A: As accurate as your monitor displays color renditions. Colors are never as precise as what is seen on the monitor during the actual image preparation. The only way to produce the most accurate color representation is to ensure your monitor is truly WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get). With that said we recommend for the closest color recreation to purchase the huey Monitor Color Correction tool from the LaserInColor.com Shop .

How does the laser identify shades and gradients?

A: CMYK color combination automatically achieves this. The image manipulation software application has the color separation (or needed shades and gradients) ability built in. The laser color inks are "mixed automatically" when you laser each of the four individual job files with their corresponding inks.

How do the inks not colorize where the image doesn’t use that particular color?

A: The laser color inks only activate where the laser beam fires. The specially formulated Atomic Art laser color inks require a specific temperature in order to activate and because laser systems are so precise the inks will only activate where the laser beam fires, ignoring all other areas of the image. With that said, only where the color will be lasered, is where the laser inks need to be applied. The rest of the ink will simply be wiped off with a damp cloth.

How durable is Atomic Art?

A: Highly durable against normal wear and tear, i.e., scratch resistant, UV resistant, weather resistant. Through a series of unique tests; both by Atomic Art and two (2) independent testing facilities, it has been determined that in order to damage the image, the surface itself must be impaired.

How can I become involved with Atomic Art?

Atomic Art sells direct and through a worldwide network of dealers to the end user.
The only requirements for utilizing Atomic Art is:

  1. An Atomic Art enabled laser system (no laser yet, we can assist you in obtaining a system )
  2. An air-brush & compressor (to evenly apply the specially formulated laser color inks )
  3. Corel Photo-Paint or Adobe Photoshop (your laser system determines the choice )
  4. Signing of the NDA (non-disclosure agreement )
  5. Purchase the Atomic Art Kit (complete self-training system )
  6. Purchase the Atomic Art Laser Color Inks (30′ to 200′ )
